William Gary Coleman, Jr.

William Gary Coleman, Jr (Billy, Bill), 78, loving husband to Brenda Holt Coleman, passed away August 1, 2025, peacefully at their home in Georgetown. He was born in Florence, SC to the late William Gary and Eloise McLellan Coleman.

A proud 1964 graduate of McClenaghan High School, Billy lived in Florence for many years. He continued his education at Clemson University, where he graduated in 1968 with a degree in Forestry. His commitment to service was evident from the beginning: a distinguished military graduate, Billy was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, where he proudly served on active duty. He volunteered for a year-long tour in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Billy completed his service in the Army as a Captain before beginning his career in Forestry with the State Forestry Commission.

Bill joined Wilson, Wright, and Moore as a Consulting Forester, later becoming a partner in the firm. He continued his work with Wilson, Wright, Coleman & Richardson until his retirement in 2023. Over the years, Bill was recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to forestry and conservation and was considered a true expert in his field.

Bill’s passions were wide and varied. He adored his family and cherished the many friendships he made throughout his life. An avid reader, he enjoyed everything from historical works to fiction. He took great pride in his immaculate yard and had a deep love for his alma mater, Clemson University. As an outdoor enthusiast, Bill enjoyed fishing, golfing, duck hunting and Clemson football. His commitment to conservation was evident in his long-standing involvement with Ducks Unlimited, where he served as chairman of the Florence Chapter and as the State Membership Chairman for many years, ultimately becoming a Life Sponsor.

Bill was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence before joining Herbert Methodist Church upon moving to Georgetown.

Bill is survived by his wife, Brenda. His children Leigh Dodd (Paul) and Bryan Coleman of Florence, Samantha Barrineau and Holly Lee (Anthony) of Georgetown. Grandchildren Wyatt Dodd, Connor and Sullivan Coleman of Florence, Ellen Walker (David) of Scotland, Thomas Fogel, Luke Koneval, Wyatt and Hampton Lee of Georgetown. Sisters Judy Rogers (Billy) and Bonnie Jo Putnam (Rick). Sister in-law Ruby Fleming and Brother in-law Jimmy Holt (Adrie).

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
