Walter Larry Mercer, 85, widower of Joan Fulton Mercer, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
Born July 29, 1939, in Georgetown County, he was the son of the late Walter Henry Mercer and Margaret Evelyn Wiggins Mercer. Mr. Mercer spent the entirety of his career at International Paper Company where he retired after 40 years of service. Beyond his professional life, he took great pride in working with his father to build homes throughout the Georgetown County area.
A lover of the outdoors, Mr. Mercer, found joy in simple pleasures, whether casting a line, watching birds in his backyard or sitting quietly in a tree stand watching deer. This was evident in the memories and outings he shared with his family, especially taking his daughters fishing. Mr. Mercer enjoyed gardening and was a talented woodworker as well as a lifelong tinkerer who delighted in fixing just about anything and giving new life to old treasures.
Surviving are his two daughters, Michele M. Singleton (Derek) of Pawleys Island and Kristi M. Huestis (Ricky) of Socastee; two grandsons, Clinton E. Singleton of Atlanta, GA and Christopher D. Singleton (Kyndal) of Flower Mound, TX; one granddaughter, Emily A. Huestis of Socastee; two great grandsons, Caden and Colton Singleton; one great granddaughter, Julia Singleton; two brothers, E. Glenn Mercer (Kathy) of Barrington, IL and Mark A. Mercer (Amber) of Georgetown; one sister, Julie M. Sanderson (James) of Georgetown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Mercer was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald David “Ronnie” Mercer.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff and caregivers at Magnolia Bridge at Murrells Inlet, Live Long Well Care and Heartland Hospice for their kindness and support in Mr. Mercer’s final season of life.
