Irby Thayer Pope

Irby Thayer Pope, 93, husband of Mary Miller Pope, passed away Friday, November 29, 2024.

Born on December 18, 1930, in Hemingway, he was a son of the late Irby Pope and the late Eva Tanner Pope. Mr. Pope worked for International Paper Company prior to attending Baily Technical College in St. Louis, MO. After college, Mr. Pope worked from Hughes Motors, where he retired from after 35 years of service. Mr. Pope served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a master Mason. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school and served as chairman of deacons and ushers for several different churches. Mr. Pope enjoyed shooting pool and fishing. He was a loving husband and father.

Survivors include his wife of 76 years, Mary Pope; one son, Richard Pope (Angel); three grandchildren, Forrest, Christian and Garrett; a brother, Joseph Pope; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Francine Pope; three sisters, Alvilda Pope Russ, Olene Pope Avant and Myrtle Pope Goude; and two brothers, Johnny Avant and Wayne Avant.

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Center Baptist Church Cemetery.
