Harriet Jean McDowell passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of strength, kindness, unwavering love, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Harriet was born in Walterboro, South Carolina, to the late Harry Franklin Canaday and Bernice Louise Canaday. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her brother, Bruce Franklin Canaday.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Bobby Davis McDowell Jr.; her loving children, Valerie Mims (Corey), Travis Mercer, and Lance Mercer (Brittany); and her eight beloved grandchildren: Brayden, Harper, Cullen, Brooklyn, Kyla, Everett, Evelyn, and Ariana.
Harriet’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved her children unconditionally, but becoming Ma-Ma was one of her life’s greatest blessings. She adored every moment spent with her grandchildren, creating memories they will carry with them forever.
She was known for her loving heart, incredible strength, and selfless nature. No matter what challenges life placed before her, she met them with grace, determination, and a deep love for those around her. She was the kind of person who always put her family first and made everyone feel loved.
Harriet had a special place in her heart for animals, especially cats. She never could turn away a stray and was known for feeding and caring for any cat that found its way to her. Her kindness extended beyond her family, and even the smallest creatures were recipients of the compassion and unconditional love she so freely gave.
Harriet loved to cook and bake, especially during the holidays. Every season brought a new recipe she couldn’t wait to share, proudly telling everyone, “You have to try this—it’s so good!” Those simple moments around the kitchen table became treasured family traditions that will never be forgotten.
Halloween was her favorite holiday, and she embraced it with excitement every year. Whether it was decorating, dressing up, or celebrating with her family, she found joy in every part of it. She was also a lifelong Elvis Presley fan, and his music always brought a smile to her face.
Harriet took tremendous pride in her work. She possessed an extraordinary work ethic, rarely missing a day throughout her career because she genuinely loved what she did. She cared deeply for her patients and formed lasting friendships with her coworkers. Her dedication, compassion, and reliability earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Above all else, Harriet will be remembered for the unconditional love she gave so freely. She was the heart of her family—a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, loyal friend, and a woman whose strength inspired everyone around her.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that her love, her laughter, her traditions, and the countless memories she created will live on through her family for generations to come.
Harriet will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
