Dorothy Glahn "Dita" Byers

Dorothy “Dita” Glahn was born on August 26, 1939, in Sincelejo, Colombia, SA. On that same day her mother, Dorothy Casseres Glahn, died in childbirth. Her father, Ricardo Glahn, took her by ship to Costa Rica to be cared for by her maternal grandmother.

Dita attended Costa Rican schools and was taught to speak English by her maternal grandmother, Lena Casseres, whom she called “mama”. She came to Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC and that is where she met her husband, Robert “Bob” Byers. They married on September 4, 1960. They had 3 children, Rick Byers, Ginny Deeter and Kenneth Byers. They took their family to the mission field to the countries of Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica for 16 years of serving the Lord with CAM International.

They returned from the field to work in churches as well as Columbia International University where Dita worked in the Extension Division while Bob was Director of Admissions. Dita always had a beautiful way of ministering to women through her “tea parties”. She loved Jesus more than anything in this world and will be greatly missed by her family: Rick & Jennifer Byers, Ginny & Larry Deeter, Harry & Kenneth Byers-Russell. She had 7 grandchildren: Liana Lomma, Owen Byers, Justin Deeter, Krista Huff, Grace Ayala, Ian Deeter, and Shannen Deeter. She also had 16 great grandchildren and one on the way.

Dita’s long journey with Alzheimer’s ended on June 11, 2025, and immediately she went into the presence of the Lord whom she loved and served. The family is grateful for the service of Tidelands Hospice and Senior Helpers.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Friday, June 20, 2025, at Lakewood Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
