Carrol Eugene Baker Sr.

1930 — July 7, 2016

Carrol Eugene Baker, Sr., 86, of Georgetown, husband of Louise Hodges Baker, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at his home with his family by his side. Born on May 1, 1930, in a log cabin on the family farm in Sycamore, GA, he was a son of the late Offie Franklin Baker and the late Myrtie Lee Whisenhunt Baker. After growing up on the family farm he later served in the US Army and received his military training at Ft. Gordon in Augusta. He was stationed in Japan at Camp Gifu as an MP during the Korean War. Mr. Baker founded Baker Glass in 1954 and retired in 1998. Mr. Baker was a member of First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School at Tara Hall for almost 30 years and the county jail for many years. Mr. Baker enjoyed gardening, fishing and telling jokes to include making it known that he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the School of Hard Knocks, as well as saying he was a retired share cropper. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and most of all helping others. He was a Mason and was a member of the Winyah Lodge #40. Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; six children, Myra Ranta (Gil) of Pawleys Island, Gene Baker (Debbie) of Georgetown, Sara Patton (Tom) of Columbia, Joel Baker (Faye) of Columbia, Art Baker (Jennifer) of Pawleys Island and Chris Baker (Debbie) of Georgetown; 19 grandchildren, Parker Johnson, Callie Johnson West, Michael Baker, Jennifer Baker, Trace Baker, Elizabeth Baker, Catherine Higginbotham, Rebecca Cumbee, Brian Baker, Laura Baker, Andrew Baker, Chase Baker, Sydney Baker, Jenna Baker, Josiah Baker, CJ Baker, Caroline Baker and William Baker; five great grandchildren, Dawson Johnson, Willie West, Zoe Baker, Penny Baker and Logan Higginbotham; one brother, Offie Harold Baker (Geneva) of Georgetown; one sister, Mattie Virginia Raines of Ashburn, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Homer Franklin Baker, James Edward Baker and Arthur Creel Baker; four sisters, Ruthland Opal Tucker, Ameritte Blanch Gregory and two sisters who died during infancy; and a granddaughter, Heather Lorraine Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 3 PM Saturday, July 9, 2016 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Sherrill officiating. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at First Baptist Church.
