Buck Odum

Berties D. “Buck” Odum, Jr., 76, widower of Teresa Ann Odum, left this world to extend his life in eternal paradise, Heaven.

Born on December 20, 1949, in Conway, Mr. Odum was a son of the late Bertice Dewitt Odum of Georgia and the late Mary Alice Davis Mathis of Georgetown. As a child, he earned the nickname “Buckshot” because he could run before he could walk. His speed and athletic ability earned him MVP honors in every sport he played, and he was recognized as the most outstanding athlete each year of high school. Mr. Odum was offered a football scholarship to Marshall University but ultimately chose not to accept it—a decision that proved to be a blessing in disguise when the team later perished in a plane crash. The tragedy inspired the movie “We Are Marshall.”

A lifelong boatsman and fisherman, Mr. Odum had many great catches and countless stories—enough to fill a book. Golf was his favorite hobby, and he enjoyed spending his spare time on the course. He retired from International Paper Company after 28 years of service as an electrician.

Mr. Odum was a hardworking man devoted to his family and friends. Always willing to help anyone who asked, he would give someone the shirt off his back. Those who shared his life knew they could count on him. No words can fully express how deeply he will be missed. For those 4who knew him, Mr. Odum will always be a legend.

This poem is dedicated to him.

I just wanted to let you know that I made it home. The journey wasn’t an easy one, but it didn’t take too long. Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh and new, I wish that you could close your eyes and see it too. Please try not to be sad for me. Please try to understand that God has taken care of me. I’m in the shelter of his hands. Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying and Ill never hurt again. Its so peaceful when all the angles sing. I have to go for now; I just have to try my wings. – Author Unknown
